History of Halloween
By Grim Command of Grim Arcades
Halloween is the second most celebrated holiday, next to Christmas. At some point in our young lives, we looked forward to the one day a year that we could dress up in costumes for the night, and come home with a bag filled with treats, but how much do you really know about how Halloween came to be? The holiday was first celebrated in Ireland. However, it was originally named Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest. It was also a day the druids believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth to cause trouble and damaged the crops. Therefore on the night of the celebration, they dressed up in costumes to confuse the spirits. The bonfires were lit to offer up crops and animal sacrifices to help protect them through the winter months, and the Celtic priest would try to make predictions of the future. The Romans had their own holidays. Feralia was the day of remembrance for the dead that had passed, and the other was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. After the Romans had conquered most of the celtic territories in 43 A.D., these 3 holidays were combined, and it is believed that is where the tradition of bobbing for apples came from. Later during the 17th century, Christianity had spread through the land, and Pope Boniface IV declared All Saints Day in an attempt to replace this pagan holiday. It was to be a day to honor the saints and the Christian martyrs that had given their lives to protect their faith. The celebration was to be called All Hallows on November 1st. Since the pagan holiday was celebrated the evening before the All Hallows day, It became known as All Hallows Eve, and that's where the name Halloween comes from today. |
